Introduction
Dabanex is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient Dabigatran Etexilate. It is available in capsule form and is commonly known by its generic name.
Uses
Dabanex is primarily prescribed to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (a heart rhythm disorder). It is also used to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients who have been treated with a parenteral anticoagulant for 5-10 days.
Dosage and Administration
The dosage of Dabanex may vary depending on the indication and individual patient factors. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider. Generally, the recommended dose for atrial fibrillation is 150 mg taken orally, twice daily, with or without food. For the treatment of DVT and PE, the recommended dose is 150 mg taken orally, twice daily, after 5-10 days of parenteral anticoagulant therapy.
Mechanism of Action
Dabanex belongs to a class of medications called direct thrombin inhibitors. It works by inhibiting thrombin, an enzyme involved in the clotting process. By inhibiting thrombin, Dabanex helps prevent the formation of blood clots, reducing the risk of stroke and other thromboembolic events.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as indigestion, stomach pain, and nausea. It may also cause bruising or bleeding more easily than usual. Serious side effects may include signs of bleeding, such as unexpected bleeding, bruising, or blood in the urine. If you experience any of these side effects, seek medical attention immediately.
Drug Interactions
Dabanex may interact with other medications, including antiplatelet drugs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and certain antibiotics. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, to avoid potential interactions that could affect the safety and effectiveness of Dabanex.
Precautions
Before taking Dabanex, inform your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you have, especially if you have a history of bleeding disorders, liver or kidney problems, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Dabanex is contraindicated in patients with active pathological bleeding or a history of hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients.
Storage
Dabanex should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. It should be kept out of reach of children and pets. Do not use the medication if it is past its expiration date.
Patient Tips
- Take Dabanex exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
- Do not stop taking the medication without consulting your healthcare provider, as this may increase your risk of blood clots.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is close to the time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
- Inform all healthcare professionals involved in your care, including dentists and surgeons, that you are taking Dabanex.
- If you are scheduled for any surgical or dental procedures, inform your healthcare provider in advance, as temporary discontinuation of Dabanex may be necessary to reduce the risk of bleeding during the procedure.
