Introduction

Catapred is a medication that contains the active ingredient Prednisolone. It is available under the brand name Catapred. This eye drop is primarily used to treat inflammation and swelling in the eyes.

Uses

Catapred is commonly prescribed to manage various eye conditions, including:

  • Allergic conjunctivitis: It helps relieve inflammation and itching caused by allergies.
  • Uveitis: It reduces inflammation in the uvea, the middle layer of the eye.
  • Episcleritis and scleritis: It helps alleviate inflammation in the outer layers of the eye.
  • Post-operative inflammation: It aids in reducing inflammation following eye surgery.

Your healthcare provider will determine if Catapred is suitable for your specific eye condition.

Dosage and Administration

follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding the dosage and administration of Catapred. The usual recommended dose for adults is 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) 4 to 6 times per day. The dosage may be adjusted based on your individual response to the medication.

Before using the eye drop, wash your hands thoroughly. Tilt your head back, look up, and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the pocket without touching the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface. Close your eyes gently for a few minutes to allow the medication to distribute evenly.

Mechanism of Action

Prednisolone, the active ingredient in Catapred, belongs to a class of medications called corticosteroids. It works by reducing inflammation in the eye. Prednisolone inhibits the production of certain substances in the body that cause inflammation, thereby helping to alleviate symptoms such as redness, swelling, and itching.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include temporary stinging or burning sensation, blurred vision, increased sensitivity to light, and eye irritation. These side effects are usually mild and temporary.

Serious side effects are rare but can occur. If you experience any of the following, contact your healthcare provider immediately:

  • Severe eye pain or discomfort
  • Vision changes or loss
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing

Drug Interactions

inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, as well as any herbal supplements. Some medications may interact with Catapred and affect its effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects. Common drug interactions may include certain antibiotics, antifungals, and other corticosteroids.

Precautions

Before using Catapred, inform your healthcare provider if you have any known allergies to Prednisolone or any other corticosteroids. Additionally, discuss your medical history, especially if you have certain eye conditions (such as glaucoma or cataracts) or any other underlying health conditions.

Catapred is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, unless specifically advised by your healthcare provider.
