Introduction
Alcarex KT is a prescription medication that combines the active ingredients Alcaftadine and Ketorolac. Alcaftadine is an antihistamine, while Ketorolac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). This eye drop is commonly used to relieve symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, such as itching and redness.
Uses
Alcarex KT is primarily prescribed to treat allergic conjunctivitis, which is an inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by an allergic reaction. It helps to alleviate symptoms such as itching, redness, and watering of the eyes. This medication is suitable for adults and children aged 2 years and older.
Dosage and Administration
The recommended dosage for Alcarex KT is one drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily. To administer the eye drop, follow these steps:
Wash your hands thoroughly.
Tilt your head back and look up.
Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
Hold the dropper tip close to your eye without touching it.
Squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the pocket.
Close your eyes for a moment and gently press your finger against the inner corner of your eye to prevent the medication from draining out.
Blot any excess liquid with a clean tissue.
Mechanism of Action
Alcaftadine, one of the active ingredients in Alcarex KT, works by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance released during an allergic reaction. This helps to reduce itching, redness, and other symptoms associated with allergic conjunctivitis. Ketorolac, the other active ingredient, helps to reduce inflammation in the eye by inhibiting the production of certain chemicals called prostaglandins.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include eye irritation, burning or stinging sensation, dry eyes, and blurred vision. These side effects are usually mild and temporary. However, if you experience any severe or persistent side effects, such as eye pain, increased sensitivity to light, or changes in vision, seek medical attention immediately.
Drug Interactions
inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements. Some medications may interact with Alcarex KT and affect its effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects. Common drug interactions may include other eye drops or medications that contain NSAIDs. To ensure your safety, consult your healthcare provider for specific guidance.
Precautions
Before using Alcarex KT, inform your healthcare provider if you have any known allergies to Alcaftadine, Ketorolac, or any other ingredients in the medication. Additionally, let your healthcare provider know if you have any other eye conditions or if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Alcarex KT should be used with caution in patients with a history of bleeding disorders or certain types of asthma. Avoid contact lens wear while using this medication.
Storage
Alcarex KT should be stored at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Do not freeze the medication, and avoid storing it in the bathroom or near the kitchen sink. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.
