Introduction

Algonex-D is a medication that combines three active ingredients: Phenylephrine, Chlorpheniramine Maleate, and Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide. It is available in syrup form and is commonly used to relieve symptoms associated with respiratory allergies, the common cold, and cough.

Uses

Algonex-D is prescribed to alleviate symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and cough caused by respiratory allergies or the common cold. It is also used to suppress coughing and provide temporary relief from cough symptoms.

Dosage and Administration

Dosing instructions may vary depending on the patient’s age, weight, and medical condition. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional or the directions on the product label.

For adults and children 12 years and older:

  • Take 10 mL of Algonex-D every 4 to 6 hours, as needed.
  • Do not exceed 4 doses (40 mL) within 24 hours.

For children between 6 to 12 years old:

  • Take 5 mL of Algonex-D every 4 to 6 hours, as needed.
  • Do not exceed 4 doses (20 mL) within 24 hours.

Use an appropriate measuring device to ensure accurate dosing. Shake the syrup well before use.

Mechanism of Action

Algonex-D contains three active ingredients that work in different ways to relieve symptoms.

  • Phenylephrine: It is a nasal decongestant that works by constricting blood vessels in the nasal passages, reducing nasal congestion and swelling.
  • Chlorpheniramine Maleate: It is an antihistamine that blocks the effects of histamine, a substance produced by the body during an allergic reaction. By reducing the effects of histamine, it helps relieve symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and watery eyes.
  • Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide: It is a cough suppressant that works by suppressing the cough reflex in the brain.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and nausea. These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own.

Serious side effects are rare but may include allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, and high blood pressure. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, seek medical attention immediately.

Drug Interactions

Algonex-D may interact with certain medications, including:

  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
  • Antidepressants
  • Sedatives
  • Blood pressure medications

inform your healthcare professional about all the medications you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions. They can provide guidance on the safe use of Algonex-D.

Precautions

Before using Algonex-D, consider the following precautions:

  • Contraindications: Do not use Algonex-D if you are allergic to any of its active ingredients or if you have severe high blood pressure, severe heart disease, or an overactive thyroid.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your healthcare professional if you have any medical conditions, such as diabetes, glaucoma, prostate problems, liver disease, or kidney disease.
