Alimpenam C Injection

Introduction

Alimpenam C is a medication containing the active ingredients Imipenem and Cilastatin. It is used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria.

Uses

Alimpenam C is prescribed for the treatment of a wide range of infections, including intra-abdominal infections, skin and skin structure infections, urinary tract infections, and lower respiratory tract infections.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage and administration of Alimpenam C should be determined by a healthcare professional based on the severity of the infection, the patient’s renal function, and the specific bacterial susceptibility. It is typically administered intravenously over a period of 20 to 40 minutes.

Mechanism of Action

Imipenem in Alimpenam C inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death. Cilastatin, on the other hand, prevents the inactivation of imipenem by renal dehydropeptidase-I, thereby prolonging its antibacterial activity.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Alimpenam C may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and injection site reactions. Serious side effects such as severe allergic reactions, seizures, and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea may occur. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if any serious side effects are experienced.

Drug Interactions

Alimpenam C may interact with valproic acid, leading to decreased levels of valproic acid and potential loss of seizure control. Concomitant use with probenecid may increase and prolong the serum levels of imipenem and cilastatin.

Precautions

Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to beta-lactams should exercise caution when using Alimpenam C. Inform the healthcare provider about all current medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, to avoid potential interactions.

Storage

Alimpenam C should be stored at controlled room temperature between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). It should be protected from light and kept out of the reach of children.
