Introduction

Brinzolast is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredients Brinzolamide and Brimonidine. It is commonly used to treat elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. This medication is available under the brand name Brinzolast.

Uses

Brinzolast is prescribed to lower intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. By reducing the pressure inside the eye, it helps to prevent damage to the optic nerve and maintain good vision.

Dosage and Administration

Brinzolast should be used exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional. The usual recommended dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) three times daily. Follow the instructions provided by your doctor regarding the number of drops and the frequency of use.

To administer the eye drops, follow these steps:

Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the eye drop bottle.

Tilt your head back and look up.

Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket.

Hold the bottle upside down, close to your eye, and squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the pocket.

Close your eyes gently for a few seconds to allow the medication to spread evenly.

If you are using drops in both eyes, repeat the above steps for the other eye.

Avoid touching the tip of the dropper to any surface to prevent contamination.

Mechanism of Action

Brinzolast contains two active ingredients: Brinzolamide and Brimonidine. Brinzolamide belongs to a class of medications known as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. It works by reducing the production of fluid in the eye, thereby lowering intraocular pressure. Brimonidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist that helps to decrease the production of fluid and increase the drainage of fluid from the eye. Together, these ingredients help to reduce intraocular pressure and maintain normal eye pressure.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Burning or stinging sensation in the eyes
  • Redness or itching of the eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Foreign body sensation in the eyes

These side effects are usually mild and temporary. However, if any of these side effects persist or worsen, contact your healthcare professional.

In rare cases, Brinzolast may cause serious side effects such as:

  • Eye pain or discomfort
  • Swelling or inflammation of the eye
  • Changes in vision
  • Eye discharge or crusting
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Signs of an allergic reaction (e.g., rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness)

If you experience any of these serious side effects, seek immediate medical attention.
