Dorfort 2% Eye Drop

Introduction

Dorfort is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient dorzolamide. It is available under the brand name Dorfort. This medication is primarily used to treat increased pressure in the eye due to open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Uses

Dorfort is prescribed to lower high intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. By reducing the pressure in the eye, this medication helps prevent vision loss and further damage to the optic nerve.

Dosage and Administration

The usual recommended dosage of Dorfort is one drop in the affected eye(s), three times a day. Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional. To administer the eye drops, tilt your head back slightly, pull down the lower eyelid, and squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the pocket formed between the lower eyelid and the eye. Close your eyes gently for a minute to allow the medication to spread evenly.

Mechanism of Action

Dorfort belongs to a class of medications known as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Dorzolamide, the active ingredient, works by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase in the eye. This reduces the production of aqueous humor, the fluid that fills the front part of the eye. By decreasing the production of aqueous humor, Dorfort helps to lower intraocular pressure.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include a bitter or unusual taste in the mouth, a stinging or burning sensation in the eye upon administration, blurred vision, and redness of the eye. These side effects are usually mild and temporary.

Serious side effects are rare but may include severe eye pain, eye swelling, eye discharge, eye itching, or a sudden decrease in vision. If you experience any of these serious side effects, seek immediate medical attention.

Drug Interactions

Dorfort may interact with other medications. Inform your healthcare professional about all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products. Some medications that may interact with Dorfort include oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, such as acetazolamide, and other eye drops containing dorzolamide or brinzolamide. These interactions can affect the efficacy or increase the risk of side effects.

Precautions

Before using Dorfort, inform your healthcare professional if you have any allergies, especially to sulfa drugs. Discuss any medical conditions you have, including kidney problems or a history of eye surgery. Dorfort should be used with caution in patients with certain medical conditions.

Avoid touching the tip of the dropper to any surface, including the eye, to prevent contamination. If you are using other eye medications, wait at least 10 minutes before applying them after using Dorfort.

Storage

Dorfort should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Do not freeze the medication. If the eye drops become discolored or show any signs of deterioration, do not use them and consult your healthcare professional for a replacement.

Patient Tips

• Follow the prescribed dosage and administration instructions provided by your healthcare professional.
• If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using Dorfort. You may reinsert them 15 minutes after applying the eye drops.
• If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule.
• Do not use Dorfort if the seal on the bottle is broken or if the solution has changed color or become cloudy.
