Introduction
Eylac is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient Ketorolac. It is available under the brand name Eylac. This medication is primarily used to relieve eye inflammation and pain following certain types of eye surgery.
Uses
Eylac is prescribed to patients who have undergone cataract extraction or corneal refractive surgery. It is used to reduce eye pain and inflammation that may occur after these procedures.
Dosage and Administration
The dosage and administration of Eylac should be determined by your healthcare provider. Typically, one to two drops are instilled into the affected eye(s) four times daily for up to two weeks after surgery. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding the frequency and duration of use.
Mechanism of Action
Ketorolac, the active ingredient in Eylac, belongs to a class of medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by reducing the production of certain substances in the body that cause pain, inflammation, and swelling. By inhibiting these substances, Ketorolac helps to alleviate eye discomfort and promote healing after surgery.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include temporary stinging or burning sensation in the eyes, blurred vision, and increased sensitivity to light. These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own.
However, if you experience any serious side effects such as severe eye pain, eye redness, eye discharge, or changes in vision, seek immediate medical attention. These side effects could be signs of a serious allergic reaction or other complications that require medical intervention.
Drug Interactions
inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products. Eylac may interact with certain medications, such as other NSAIDs or blood thinners, which could increase the risk of bleeding or other adverse effects. Your healthcare provider will assess the potential interactions and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.
Precautions
Before using Eylac, inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, including allergies, eye infections, or previous eye surgeries. Disclose any medications or substances you are currently using, as they may interact with Eylac.
Eylac is contraindicated in patients with a known allergy to Ketorolac or other NSAIDs. It should not be used in patients with active peptic ulcers or a history of gastrointestinal bleeding. This medication should be used with caution in patients with a history of asthma, bleeding disorders, or kidney problems.
Storage
Eylac should be stored at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Do not use the medication if it has expired or if the liquid has changed in color or consistency. If you have any questions about storage, consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
Patient Tips
- Wash your hands thoroughly before using Eylac to prevent contamination.
- Tilt your head back and gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a pouch. Instill the prescribed number of drops into the pouch, avoiding contact between the dropper tip and your eye or any other surface.
- Close your eyes gently for a few moments to allow the medication to spread evenly across your eye(s).
- If you are using other eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes between instilling different drops to prevent interactions.
- Do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, as it may contaminate the medication.
- If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using Eylac and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
- If you experience persistent eye discomfort or worsening symptoms while using Eylac, contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
