Introduction
Stamaril is a vaccine that provides protection against the yellow fever virus. It contains live attenuated (weakened) strains of the virus and is administered through a subcutaneous injection. This vaccine is also known by its generic name, Yellow Fever Vaccine.
Uses
Stamaril is primarily used to prevent yellow fever, a viral disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Yellow fever can cause flu-like symptoms, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), and in severe cases, liver and kidney failure. This vaccine is recommended for individuals traveling to or living in areas where yellow fever is endemic or for those at risk of exposure to the virus.
Dosage and Administration
The recommended dosage for Stamaril is a single 0.5 mL injection administered subcutaneously (under the skin). It is typically given at least 10 days prior to potential exposure to the yellow fever virus. The vaccine should be administered by a healthcare professional who is familiar with the proper injection technique.
Mechanism of Action
Stamaril works by stimulating the immune system to produce protective antibodies against the yellow fever virus. The attenuated strains of the virus in the vaccine are designed to trigger an immune response without causing the disease. When a vaccinated individual is exposed to the actual yellow fever virus, their immune system recognizes it and mounts a rapid response, preventing the development of the disease or reducing its severity.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Stamaril may include mild soreness or redness at the injection site, low-grade fever, and headache. These side effects are usually mild and resolve on their own within a few days.
Serious side effects are rare but can include an allergic reaction, characterized by difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, hives, or a rash. If any of these symptoms occur after receiving the vaccine, immediate medical attention should be sought.
Drug Interactions
There are no known significant drug interactions with Stamaril. However, it is always important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, to ensure there are no potential interactions.
Precautions
Before receiving Stamaril, inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of severe allergic reactions to any vaccine components or if you have a weakened immune system due to a medical condition or medication.
This vaccine is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as its safety in these populations has not been established.
Storage
Stamaril should be stored in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C (36°F and 46°F). It should be protected from light and kept out of the reach of children. Do not freeze the vaccine.
Patient Tips
- If you are planning to travel to an area where yellow fever is endemic, consult with a healthcare professional well in advance to determine if you need the vaccine and to ensure you receive it in a timely manner.
- Monitor the injection site after receiving the vaccine. Mild soreness or redness is common and should resolve on its own. However, if you experience severe pain, increasing redness, or signs of infection (such as pus or warmth at the site), contact your healthcare provider.
- If you develop any symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face or throat, seek immediate medical attention.
- continue taking precautions against mosquito bites even after receiving the yellow fever vaccine, as it does not provide complete protection against all mosquito-borne diseases. Use insect repellents, wear protective clothing, and stay in screened or air-conditioned areas when possible.
