Introduction

Thrombostat is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient Enoxaparin. It is commonly used to prevent and treat blood clots in patients who are at risk due to various medical conditions.

Uses

Thrombostat is prescribed for the following conditions:

  • Prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients undergoing surgery, especially in orthopedic and general surgery.
  • Treatment of established deep vein thrombosis with or without pulmonary embolism.
  • Prevention of blood clots in patients with unstable angina or non-Q-wave myocardial infarction, when used concurrently with aspirin.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage of Thrombostat may vary depending on the specific condition being treated and the patient’s individual needs. It is typically administered as a subcutaneous injection into the fatty layer just under the skin.

The recommended dosage for preventing deep vein thrombosis after surgery is usually 40 mg once daily, starting 2 hours prior to surgery and continuing for at least 7 to 10 days.

For the treatment of established deep vein thrombosis or prevention of blood clots in patients with unstable angina or non-Q-wave myocardial infarction, the dosage may range from 1 mg/kg to 1.5 mg/kg, administered every 12 hours or once daily.

Follow the instructions provided by your healthcare professional regarding the dosage and administration of Thrombostat. Do not change the dosage or stop the medication without consulting your doctor.

Mechanism of Action

Thrombostat contains Enoxaparin, which belongs to a class of medications known as low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs). It works by inhibiting the formation of blood clots by enhancing the activity of antithrombin III, a natural substance in the body that helps prevent excessive blood clotting.

By inhibiting the clotting process, Thrombostat helps reduce the risk of serious conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and unstable angina.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include bruising, pain, or irritation at the injection site. These side effects are usually mild and temporary.

However, some individuals may experience more serious side effects, such as:

  • Signs of bleeding, such as unusual bruising, nosebleeds, or blood in urine or stool.
  • Allergic reactions, including rash, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.

If you experience any of these serious side effects, seek immediate medical attention.

Drug Interactions

Thrombostat may interact with certain medications, including:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Increased risk of bleeding.
  • Anticoagulants: Increased risk of bleeding.
  • Platelet aggregation inhibitors: Increased risk of bleeding.

Inform your healthcare professional about all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements, to avoid potential drug interactions.

Precautions

Before using Thrombostat, inform your healthcare professional if you have any of the following conditions or risk factors:

  • History of bleeding disorders or blood clotting problems.
  • Kidney or liver disease.
  • History of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA).
  • History of recent surgery or invasive procedures.

Thrombostat should be used with caution in patients who are at an increased risk of bleeding. It is also contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to Enoxaparin or any of its components.

Storage

Thrombostat should be stored at room temperature, away from excessive heat and moisture. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Do not freeze the medication.
