Azelastine
Azelastine is an over-the-counter medication primarily used as a nasal spray to alleviate symptoms of allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever. It works by blocking histamine receptors in the nasal passages, which helps to reduce inflammation, itching, and sneezing. Azelastine is also available in an oral formulation, which is used to treat itching and hives caused by allergic reactions.
In addition to its use in allergic rhinitis and skin allergies, azelastine has been found to be effective in treating conjunctivitis, a condition characterized by inflammation and redness of the eyes. The medication is available in eye drop form, which helps to relieve symptoms such as itching, burning, and tearing.
Azelastine is generally well-tolerated, but some common side effects may include a bitter taste in the mouth, dry mouth, and headache. These side effects are usually mild and temporary, but if they persist or worsen, it is important to consult a healthcare professional.
