Mesna, Ifosfamide

Mesna (2-mercaptoethanesulfonic acid) is a medication used in conjunction with ifosfamide, a chemotherapy drug, to protect the kidneys from potential damage caused by ifosfamide’s toxic byproducts. Mesna works by binding to these byproducts and facilitating their excretion through urine, thus reducing the risk of kidney complications.
Ifosfamide is an alkylating agent used to treat various types of cancer, including bladder, brain, and lung cancer. It works by damaging the DNA of cancer cells, inhibiting their growth and reproduction. However, one of its side effects is the formation of toxic metabolites, such as acrolein, which can cause kidney damage.
The combination of Mesna and ifosfamide allows for the safe administration of ifosfamide while minimizing the risk of kidney toxicity. Mesna is typically administered intravenously, either before or after ifosfamide treatment, depending on the treatment protocol.
