Bortezomib

Bortezomib, a proteasome inhibitor, is a prescription medication primarily used in the treatment of multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that affects the plasma cells in the bone marrow. Bortezomib works by inhibiting the proteasome, a cellular complex responsible for breaking down proteins, leading to the accumulation of misfolded proteins that eventually cause cell death.
This medication is typically administered as an injection and is often used in combination with other medications to enhance its effectiveness. In some cases, bortezomib may also be used for the treatment of certain types of lymphoma, a cancer that originates in the lymphatic system.
The use of bortezomib in the treatment of multiple myeloma has been well-established, resulting in significant improvements in patient outcomes and overall survival rates. As with any cancer treatment, bortezomib may cause side effects, which can include fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and peripheral neuropathy (numbness or tingling in the hands and feet).
