Thalidomide

Thalidomide is a medication primarily used to treat a rare skin condition called cutaneous leishmaniasis, a parasitic infection that causes skin ulcers and disfiguring sores. Additionally, it has been used in combination with other medications for the treatment of multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that affects the plasma cells in the bone marrow. Thalidomide has demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing the symptoms of multiple myeloma, including bone pain, by inhibiting the growth of cancerous cells. However, due to its teratogenic effects, causing severe birth defects when taken by pregnant women, use thalidomide with caution and adhere to strict safety protocols. Patients receiving this medication must undergo regular pregnancy tests to ensure they are not pregnant and may be required to sign an informed consent form acknowledging the potential risks associated with its use.
