High cholesterol
High cholesterol, also known as hypercholesterolemia, is a condition in which there are abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is essential for the body to function properly, but when levels are too high, it can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Typical medications used to treat high cholesterol include statins, which work by reducing the liver’s production of cholesterol, and bile acid sequestrants, which bind to bile acids in the digestive system and promote their excretion, thus reducing cholesterol levels. Other medications, such as fibrates and cholesterol absorption inhibitors, may also be prescribed in specific cases.
Follow a heart-healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications as directed to effectively manage high cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications. Regular exercise, a balanced diet low in saturated and trans fats, and maintaining a healthy weight are all crucial components of managing this condition.
