Atorvastatin
Atorvastatin is a prescribed medication within the drug class known as “Statins”, which are HMG CoA reductase inhibitors. They work primarily by decreasing the production of cholesterol within your liver. Atorvastatin inhibits a protein in your body referred to as “HMG CoA reductase.” This action diminishes your body’s capacity to form cholesterol, lowering unhealthy blood cholesterol.
Usually prescribed for individuals experiencing high levels of LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol, Atorvastatin forms part of an overall strategy to reducing the risk of conditions such as atherosclerosis, angina, heart attacks, and strokes by lowering cholesterol levels in your blood. The regular use of this medication has consistently been shown to contribute to improved arterial flexibility and reduced levels of cardiovascular disease risk indicators. It’s particularly powerful in individuals genetically disposed to high blood cholesterol and those at high risk of experiencing heart complications due to high cholesterol levels.
Atorvastatin not only diminishes low density lipoprotein (LDL, or bad cholesterol) but also works to boost High Density Lipoprotein (HDL, or ‘good’ cholesterol). Having a balanced profile of good to bad cholesterols is crucial, for it helps your system to distribute cholesterol only where required. This improves vascular health considerably. The medication, consequently, maintains overall arterial functionality and reduces inflammatory agents in your circulatory system associated with plaques within your arterial lining which can lead to coronary artery diseases.
Please take note that as with all medicine, Atorvastatin might potentially cause negative side effects such as muscle pain or nausea, if not carefully monitored, and used as per advised by the treating physician. Thus it’s indispensable for everyone using such medication to schedule and attend frequent check-ups, ensure they disclose any related symptoms to the healthcare provider and to monitor their cholesterol levels consistently while on medication.
