Dextrothyroxine

Dextrothyroxine is a synthetic thyroid hormone that is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. This medication is also known as dextrothyroid or dextrogranule. It is available in tablet form and is usually taken once daily.
Hypothyroidism can be caused by various factors, including autoimmune disorders, surgical removal of the thyroid gland, radiation therapy, or certain medications. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, constipation, dry skin, and muscle weakness.
Dextrothyroxine works by replacing the missing thyroid hormones in the body, which helps to restore normal thyroid function and alleviate the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Dextrothyroxine is not the same as natural thyroxine (T4) produced by the thyroid gland, but it has similar effects on the body.
Dextrothyroxine is typically prescribed when the patient’s hypothyroidism is not adequately controlled with natural thyroxine (T4) alone. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and take the medication as directed by the healthcare provider. Regular monitoring of thyroid function is essential to ensure that the medication is working effectively and to avoid overdose or underdose.
