Rosuvastatin
Rosuvastatin is a prescription medication that belongs to a class of drugs called statins. It is primarily used to lower elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, also known as “bad cholesterol,” in the blood. By reducing LDL cholesterol, rosuvastatin helps to decrease the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke.
Rosuvastatin is typically prescribed for individuals with high cholesterol levels that are not controlled through lifestyle modifications, such as diet and exercise. It is also used in patients with inherited forms of high cholesterol, like familial hypercholesterolemia. Additionally, rosuvastatin may be prescribed to patients with existing cardiovascular disease to further reduce the risk of future events.
The medication works by inhibiting an enzyme in the liver called HMG-CoA reductase, which is responsible for producing cholesterol. By blocking this enzyme, rosuvastatin reduces the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver, leading to a decrease in LDL cholesterol levels in the blood.
Rosuvastatin is available in various dosage forms, including tablets and oral solutions. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the individual’s specific medical condition, response to therapy, and overall risk profile. Follow the healthcare professional’s instructions and maintain regular check-ups to monitor the effectiveness and safety of the medication.
