Irbesartan, Hydrochlorothiazide
Irbesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide is a combination medication used for treating hypertension (high blood pressure) and edema (fluid retention). Irbesartan, also known as Avapro, belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), which help relax and widen blood vessels by blocking the angiotensin II hormone. This allows the blood to flow more smoothly, reducing strain on the heart and lowering blood pressure.
Hydrochlorothiazide, on the other hand, is a thiazide diuretic that increases urination to remove excess water and salt from the body. This decreases the amount of fluid in blood vessels, leading to a reduction in blood pressure. The combined effects of Irbesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide can result in a more significant reduction of blood pressure for patients who have not responded adequately to other treatments.
In addition to managing hypertension, the diuretic properties of Hydrochlorothiazide also make it useful for treating conditions related to fluid buildup, such as congestive heart failure and nephrotic syndrome.
Patients who may benefit from this medication include those who have trouble controlling their blood pressure with other medications or those with hypertension accompanied by a high level of urinary protein. Follow your healthcare provider’s guidance on dosing and monitor for side effects, which can include dizziness, fainting, and dehydration due to excessive urination. Patients should be encouraged to report any persistent symptoms to their healthcare professional.
