Tirofiban

Tirofiban is a medication known as a glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor antagonist. It is primarily used to prevent blood clots from forming in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), a procedure that involves opening blocked or narrowed blood vessels in the heart.
The formation of blood clots is a natural process that helps prevent excessive bleeding. However, in certain situations, such as during PCI, blood clots can obstruct blood flow to vital organs, leading to serious complications. Tirofiban works by inhibiting the action of platelets, the cells responsible for clot formation, thereby reducing the risk of clot-related complications.
Tirofiban is often administered as an intravenous (IV) infusion, directly into the patient’s bloodstream. The medication typically starts working within minutes of administration, providing rapid protection against blood clots during PCI.
