Ambrisentan

Ambrisentan is a prescription medication used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a condition that causes increased pressure in the blood vessels that supply the lungs. It belongs to a class of drugs called endothelin receptor antagonists, which work by blocking the action of a natural substance called endothelin, thereby relaxing and widening the blood vessels, reducing the pressure, and improving blood flow to the lungs.
Ambrisentan is specifically indicated for adults with PAH who are in WHO functional class II, III, or IV, to improve exercise capacity and delay disease progression. It is typically used in combination with other medications and lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, a low-salt diet, and smoking cessation, to optimize treatment outcomes.
Ambrisentan is available in tablet form, taken once daily at the same time each day, regardless of meals. The recommended starting dose is 5 mg, which may be increased to 10 mg after four weeks if the patient tolerates the medication well and shows a positive response. The dosage should be adjusted based on the patient’s individual needs and response to therapy.
Possible side effects of ambrisentan include headache, dizziness, swelling of the ankles or legs, and flushing. Less common but more serious side effects include liver problems, fluid retention, and low blood pressure. Patients should report any unusual symptoms or adverse reactions to their healthcare provider promptly.
