Macitentan
Macitentan is a prescription medication used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a condition where the blood vessels that supply the lungs with blood become narrowed, leading to increased blood pressure in the lungs and reduced oxygen supply to the body. It is a part of a class of drugs called endothelin receptor antagonists, which work by blocking the action of endothelin-1, a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to constrict.
Macitentan is specifically designed to improve exercise capacity, delay the progression of PAH, and reduce the risk of hospitalization due to worsening symptoms. It is particularly effective in patients with PAH associated with connective tissue diseases such as scleroderma and systemic sclerosis.
The medication is available in tablet form and is typically taken once daily, regardless of meals. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and schedule to achieve the best results.
Some common side effects of Macitentan may include headache, dizziness, swelling of the legs, and anemia. However, these side effects are usually mild and tend to subside over time. Patients should inform their healthcare provider if they experience any severe or persistent side effects.
