Varicose veins
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that appear close to the surface of the skin. They commonly affect the legs and can cause discomfort, swelling, and aching. The condition is caused by weakened valves in the veins, which impairs blood flow and pressure builds up, resulting in the bulging appearance of the veins.
There are various treatment options available for varicose veins, ranging from conservative measures such as compression stockings, elevating the legs, and lifestyle changes, to more invasive procedures. Medical interventions include sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into the affected veins to cause them to collapse, and endovenous laser ablation, which uses laser energy to seal the problematic veins.
Medications often prescribed for varicose veins include over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, for managing pain and discomfort, and topical creams containing ingredients like horse chestnut or witch hazel, which can help improve circulation and reduce inflammation. Consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for individual needs.
