Pimecrolimus
Pimecrolimus is a topical immunosuppressant medication primarily used for the treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in individuals two months of age and older. This medication works by inhibiting the activation of T-cells, which are a type of white blood cell involved in the immune response, reducing inflammation and itching associated with eczema.
Pimecrolimus cream (1%) is applied to the affected skin areas twice daily, generally for short-term use, usually not exceeding two weeks. However, the duration of treatment depends on the severity of the condition and the response to therapy. It is important to avoid applying the cream to the face, especially the lips, eyes, and mouth, as it may cause irritation or other adverse effects.
Before using pimecrolimus, inform the healthcare provider about any known allergies, existing skin infections, or immunosuppressive conditions. Regular monitoring of the skin is essential during treatment to detect any potential side effects, such as skin thinning, allergic reactions, or persistent irritation.
While pimecrolimus is effective in managing eczema symptoms, it is not a cure and should be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Patients should also continue with their usual skincare routine and avoid irritants to maintain healthy skin.
