Minoxidil, Finasteride

Minoxidil is a topical solution that is applied directly to the scalp. It works by promoting hair growth and preventing further hair loss. Minoxidil is thought to act on the hair follicle, increasing blood flow and nutrient supply, which helps to stimulate hair growth. It is available in various concentrations, with the most common being 5% for men and 2% for women.
Finasteride, on the other hand, is an oral medication that is taken once daily. It works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the primary hormone responsible for hair loss in men. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride helps to prevent further hair loss and promote hair regrowth. Finasteride is approved for use in men only, as it is not recommended for women due to potential birth defects.
Both minoxidil and finasteride have been shown to be effective in treating hair loss, but they work in different ways and have different side effect profiles. Minoxidil is generally well-tolerated, with the most common side effects being scalp irritation and unwanted hair growth. Finasteride, while generally safe, may cause sexual side effects such as reduced libido and erectile dysfunction in some users.
