Dithranol
Dithranol, also known as Anthralin, is a topical medication used to treat a variety of skin conditions, particularly psoriasis. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes patches of thick, red, scaly skin. Dithranol works by slowing down the rapid cell turnover associated with psoriasis, which reduces inflammation and clears the affected skin.
Dithranol is available as a cream, ointment, or paste and is typically applied to the affected areas of the skin once or twice daily. The medication is left on the skin for a short period, usually 15-60 minutes, before being gently washed off. The duration of treatment with dithranol can vary, ranging from a few weeks to several months, depending on the severity and type of psoriasis being treated.
While dithranol is an effective treatment for psoriasis, it may cause side effects, including skin irritation, redness, and a temporary staining of the skin and clothing. To minimize these effects, the medication should be applied sparingly and avoided in sensitive areas. In addition, patients should carefully follow their healthcare provider’s instructions regarding the application and duration of treatment.
