Psoralen

Psoralen is a medication belonging to the class of drugs known as photochemotherapy agents. It is typically used in combination with ultraviolet A (UVA) light therapy to treat certain skin conditions, primarily psoriasis.
Psoralen works by increasing the skin’s sensitivity to UVA light, which helps to slow down the rapid cell growth responsible for the appearance of scaly, red patches (plaques) in psoriasis. When applied to the affected areas of the skin, psoralen absorbs UV light and causes changes in the DNA of skin cells, disrupting their division and preventing them from accumulating. This leads to a reduction in the symptoms of psoriasis and an improvement in the overall appearance of the skin.
The combination of psoralen and UVA light therapy is known as PUVA therapy. PUVA therapy is generally reserved for patients with moderate to severe psoriasis that has not responded well to other treatments, such as topical corticosteroids or coal tar. It is typically administered in a controlled setting under the supervision of a healthcare professional, as exposure to UVA light can have side effects, such as skin burning or an increased risk of skin cancer.
While PUVA therapy can provide significant relief from the symptoms of psoriasis, it is not a cure for the condition. Additionally, long-term use of PUVA therapy may lead to the development of cataracts, skin aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. As a result, healthcare professionals should carefully consider the potential benefits and risks of PUVA therapy for each individual patient before recommending its use.
