Sevelamer
Sevelamer is a unique medical substance known as a phosphate binder. It is specifically designed to help manage high levels of phosphorus in the blood, a common issue faced by patients with kidney disease.
Phosphorus is an essential mineral found in various foods we consume daily, such as dairy products, meats, and grains. In healthy individuals, the kidneys efficiently remove excess phosphorus from the bloodstream. However, in those with kidney disease, this process becomes impaired, leading to elevated phosphorus levels, which can be harmful to the body.
Sevelamer works by binding to phosphorus in the digestive system, preventing its absorption into the bloodstream. This helps to maintain a healthy balance of phosphorus levels, reducing the risk of complications such as bone disease and heart problems.
Sevelamer is available in two forms: Sevelamer Carbonate and Sevelamer Hydrochloride. Both forms are generally well-tolerated and can be taken with or without food, as directed by a healthcare professional.
