Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism, also known as overactive thyroid, is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces excessive amounts of thyroid hormones. These hormones regulate the body’s metabolism and affect various bodily functions, including heart rate, body temperature, and weight. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism can include rapid heartbeat, weight loss, increased sweating, anxiety, and fatigue.
Medications commonly used to treat hyperthyroidism include:

Antithyroid drugs: These medications, such as Methimazole (Tapazole) and Propylthiouracil (PTU), work by inhibiting the production of thyroid hormones. They are often the first-line treatment for hyperthyroidism.
Beta-blockers: While not directly treating the root cause of hyperthyroidism, beta-blockers like Propranolol can help manage symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, anxiety, and tremors. They are often used in combination with other treatments.
Radioactive iodine: This treatment, known as Iodine-131, is a permanent solution for hyperthyroidism. It is absorbed by the thyroid gland and destroys the overactive cells, eventually leading to a reduction in hormone production.
Surgery: In some cases, especially when other treatments are not effective or when the thyroid gland is enlarged, surgery may be necessary to remove all or part of the gland. This is typically performed using a minimally invasive technique called thyroidectomy.

Always consult with a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate treatment for hyperthyroidism, considering factors such as the severity of the condition, age, and other medical history.
