Calcium Polystyrene Sulphonate
Calcium Polystyrene Sulphonate (CPS) is an ion exchange resin medication used primarily for the treatment of hyperkalemia, a condition where potassium levels in the blood are abnormally high. This can occur due to various reasons such as kidney disease, certain medications, or excessive potassium intake from food.
CPS works by exchanging the excess potassium in the bloodstream with a more harmless ion, calcium, which is then safely eliminated through the gastrointestinal tract. By doing so, it helps to lower and maintain potassium levels within the normal range, preventing complications associated with hyperkalemia such as cardiac arrhythmias and even sudden death.
The medication is typically administered in powder form, mixed with water or other suitable liquids, and taken orally. It is important to follow the doctor’s instructions carefully regarding dosage and administration to ensure the best results and minimize potential side effects, which may include gastrointestinal distress, constipation, and dehydration.
