Eltrombopag
Eltrombopag is an oral medication that belongs to a class of drugs called thrombopoietin receptor agonists. It is used to treat two main conditions:
Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP): This is a rare autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys its own platelets, leading to abnormally low platelet counts. Platelets are essential for blood clotting and wound healing. Eltrombopag helps to increase platelet levels in patients with ITP, reducing the risk of bleeding and bruising.
Chronic immune (idiopathic) thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in chronic liver disease: In this case, the medication is used for patients with liver disease who have a low platelet count due to their immune system’s attack on platelets. By increasing platelet levels, eltrombopag can help prevent excessive bleeding from minor injuries or internal bleeding.
Eltrombopag is not suitable for everyone and should only be prescribed by a healthcare professional after careful consideration of the patient’s medical history, current health condition, and potential drug interactions. Follow the prescribed dosage and attend regular check-ups to monitor the effectiveness and safety of the treatment.
