Dulaglutide
Dulaglutide is a once-weekly injectable medication primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes in adults. It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, which means it helps regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin production and suppressing glucagon release. Dulaglutide is specifically indicated for individuals whose diabetes is not adequately controlled with diet and exercise alone, or when used in combination with other diabetes medications.
This medication is available under the brand name Trulicity. It is administered via a pre-filled pen or syringe, and the injection should be given subcutaneously (under the skin) in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm once weekly. Dulaglutide is typically initiated at a dosage of 0.75 mg, which can be increased to 1.5 mg after at least one month if blood sugar control remains suboptimal.
Aside from its blood sugar-lowering effects, Dulaglutide has been shown to have additional benefits for individuals with type 2 diabetes. These include cardiovascular risk reduction, as it has been associated with a decreased risk of major adverse cardiovascular events. Furthermore, Dulaglutide can also promote weight loss and improve glycemic control in certain individuals with type 2 diabetes.
Potential side effects of Dulaglutide include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and increased blood glucose levels. More serious but less common side effects include kidney problems, allergic reactions, and pancreatitis. Patients should consult their healthcare provider if they experience any side effects while using Dulaglutide.
