Teneligliptin
Teneligliptin is an oral anti-diabetic medication belonging to the DPP-4 inhibitor class of drugs. It is primarily used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, a condition characterized by elevated blood sugar levels due to resistance to insulin or insufficient production of insulin by the body.
By inhibiting the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) enzyme, teneligliptin enhances the activity of the incretin hormones, GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide), which in turn stimulate the release of insulin from the pancreatic beta cells in response to high blood glucose levels. This results in improved glucose control and overall glycemic management.
Teneligliptin may be prescribed as monotherapy or in combination with other anti-diabetic agents, such as metformin or insulin, depending on the patient’s individual needs and disease severity. This medication does not lower blood sugar levels in people with type 1 diabetes or those with diabetic ketoacidosis.
Adhering to a healthy diet, regular exercise, and routine blood sugar monitoring are crucial components of the comprehensive management plan for patients taking teneligliptin. As with any medication, consult a healthcare professional before initiating or modifying treatment, as individualized medical advice is necessary to ensure the appropriate use of this drug.
