Vildagliptin
Vildagliptin is an oral diabetic medication belonging to the class of drugs called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. It works by increasing the levels of hormones involved in regulating blood sugar levels and promoting the secretion of insulin. This medication is primarily used as a supplementary treatment alongside dietary changes and exercise, for adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Its primary objectives are to improve glycemic control, reduce blood glucose fluctuation, and delay the progression of the disease. Vildagliptin does not cause significant weight gain or hypoglycemic episodes, making it an ideal candidate for patients with cardiovascular disorders or renal impairment. Before initiating this medication, physicians should assess its safety by considering the patient’s medical history and other concurrent medications they might be taking. Vildagliptin, when appropriately prescribed and monitored, can significantly contribute to enhanced diabetes management.
