Dry mouth

Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is a common condition characterized by a decreased saliva production or an impaired saliva flow. Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health and hydration. When the mouth becomes dry, it can lead to discomfort, difficulty swallowing, speaking, and tasting, as well as an increased risk of dental problems such as cavities and gum disease.
There are various causes of dry mouth, including medications, medical conditions, and certain medical treatments. Common medications that can cause dry mouth include antihistamines, decongestants, pain relievers, and antidepressants. Medical conditions that can lead to dry mouth include diabetes, Sjogren’s syndrome, and Parkinson’s disease. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy can also contribute to dry mouth.
To treat dry mouth, a variety of medications and oral care products are available. Over-the-counter saliva substitutes and artificial saliva products can help to temporarily relieve the discomfort of dry mouth. Sucking on sugar-free candy or chewing sugar-free gum can stimulate saliva production.
In some cases, prescription medications may be recommended to stimulate saliva production or to provide relief for symptoms. These may include saliva stimulants, such as pilocarpine (Salagen) or cevimeline (Evoxac), and medications that increase saliva flow, like bromhexine.
Practice good oral hygiene when suffering from dry mouth. Regularly brush and floss your teeth, and rinse your mouth with fluoride mouthwash to help protect your teeth from cavities. Additionally, use a fluoride toothpaste, and consider using a humidifier at night to increase moisture in the air.
Always consult with a healthcare professional to determine the best treatment plan for your individual needs.
