Tafluprost
Tafluprost is an ophthalmic solution (eye drops) prescribed for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Tafluprost is a prostaglandin analogue that works by reducing the production of aqueous humor within the eye, thereby decreasing the pressure.
Tafluprost is a highly purified prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α) that selectively reduces aqueous humor production, primarily through decreasing the outflow facility. Its primary mechanism of action involves stimulation of the maxicular prostaglandin receptor (prostaglandin F2α receptor, FP). This stimulation causes the contraction of the ciliary muscles and an increase in the size of the trabecular meshwork, leading to increased drainage of the aqueous humor from the anterior chamber of the eye.
Use Tafluprost exactly as directed by the healthcare professional, and to strictly adhere to the prescribed schedule for best results. Tafluprost should be instilled into the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening, at about the same time every day. The eye drops should not be touched or applied by the applicator tip to any other part of the body.
Patients may experience some side effects, including: ocular discomfort (such as burning, stinging, or irritation), increased lacrimation (tear production), and conjunctival hyperemia (redness of the white part of the eye). These side effects are generally mild and tend to lessen with continued use. Patients should inform their healthcare professional if they experience any bothersome symptoms.
