Ganciclovir
Ganciclovir is an antiviral medication used to treat various viral infections, particularly those caused by the cytomegalovirus (CMV). It is a nucleoside analogue that inhibits the replication of the virus by interfering with its DNA synthesis. Ganciclovir is commonly prescribed to immunocompromised individuals, such as those with HIV/AIDS or organ transplant recipients, who are at a higher risk of developing CMV infections.
The medication is available in both oral and intravenous (IV) forms, allowing for flexible administration based on the severity of the infection and the patient’s overall health. Ganciclovir is typically used in combination with other antiviral agents or supportive care measures to manage CMV infections effectively.
Ganciclovir should be used with caution, as it can cause severe side effects, including bone marrow suppression, which may lead to anemia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia. Regular monitoring of blood counts is essential during treatment to ensure patient safety.
