Sodium Picosulfate

Sodium Picosulfate is an oral medication classified as a peripheral stimulant laxative. It’s indicated for the short-term treatment of constipation and the cleaning of the large intestine as preparation for an antegrade continence enema (ACE procedure) or surgery.
By stimulating peristalsis (the organized, rhythmical contractions of the muscles of the alimentary canal) and increasing water secretion in the colon, this medication leads to softened bowel movement in a relatively shorter time duration. It is worth noting, that while Sodium Picosulfate is typically safe to use, it shouldn’t be used for long term constipation or for managing chronic gastrointestinal disease, as data on its long term safety may not be available. In case one experiences severe persistent abdominal pain, nausea, fever, or rectal bleeding, stopping the medication is recommended followed by immediate communication with a doctor.
