Clarithromycin

Clarithromycin is an antibiotic belonging to the macrolide family. It is used to treat various bacterial infections, such as those affecting the respiratory tract, skin, and ears. Clarithromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, which stops the bacteria from growing and multiplying.
One common use of clarithromycin is for the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections, such as strep throat and tonsillitis, caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. It is also effective against bacterial pneumonia, including pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Legionnaires’ disease.
In addition to respiratory infections, clarithromycin is used to treat skin and soft tissue infections caused by specific strains of bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It is also prescribed for ear infections, particularly otitis media, caused by susceptible bacteria.
Clarithromycin is sometimes used in combination with other antibiotics for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. It can also be used to prevent and treat bacterial endocarditis, a serious infection of the heart’s inner lining, in patients who are at high risk.
Follow the prescribed dosage and duration of clarithromycin to ensure its effectiveness and minimize the risk of developing antibiotic resistance. Patients should complete the full course of treatment, even if they feel better before finishing the medication. Inform healthcare providers about any other medications, supplements, or herbal products being taken, as clarithromycin can interact with certain drugs, affecting their effectiveness.
