Cloxacillin

Cloxacillin is a semisynthetic penicillin antibiotic, derived from phenoxymethylpenicillin. It is used to treat various bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Staphylococcus aureus, including skin and soft tissue infections, pneumonia, and bacteremia. The medication works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, which eventually leads to bacterial cell death. It is available in oral and intravenous forms, allowing for flexibility in administration based on the severity of the infection. Cloxacillin is commonly prescribed when there is a known or suspected susceptibility to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). However, it is ineffective against MRSA strains that are resistant to both methicillin and cloxacillin. As with any antibiotic, complete the entire course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
