Neomycin

Neomycin is an antibiotic medication that belongs to a class of drugs called aminoglycosides. It is primarily used to treat bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Neomycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, which ultimately leads to the death of the bacteria.
The medication is commonly used in topical form, such as in ear drops, eye drops, creams, and ointments, to treat infections in these areas. Neomycin is often combined with other antibiotics, such as polymyxin B and gramicidin, to provide a broader spectrum of activity against different types of bacteria.
Neomycin should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or other aminoglycosides. Additionally, it should be used with caution in patients with kidney or hearing impairments, as these populations may be at a higher risk for adverse effects.
