Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is a prescription medication available as a single-ingredient pharmaceutical or in combination with other drugs, such as emtricitabine and/or emtricitabine/e-favirenz/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. As a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor, it actively suppresses the replication process of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which can cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Administered orally, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is primarily used to prevent or treat HIV infection in adults who are at high risk of HIV acquisition or have been exposed to a recent high-risk circumstance. It is also used, in combination with other antiretroviral medications, to treat HIV and stop its progression in individuals who have established the infection.
Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is formulated as a capsule intended to be taken once daily on an empty stomach, preferably early in the morning. It is typically combined with other antiretroviral drugs to create potent, multi-drug regimen known as highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).
The medication carries certain risks and precautions. It is not recommended in cases of severe kidney dysfunction or in individuals below 12 years of age.
