Hiv infection

HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a virus that attacks the immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which are crucial for the body’s ability to fight infections. Untreated HIV can lead to AIDS, or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, a stage where the immune system is severely damaged and susceptible to life-threatening infections and diseases.
Medications for HIV work by preventing the virus from replicating or by boosting the immune system. There are several classes of antiretroviral drugs available, including Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs), Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTIs), Protease Inhibitors (PIs), and Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitors (INSTIs).
These medications are typically prescribed in combination therapy, known as Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), to maximize their effectiveness and minimize the risk of drug resistance. Follow the prescribed treatment plan and maintain regular medical checkups to ensure optimal health and viral suppression.
In addition to medication, HIV prevention measures include practicing safe sex, using condoms, and getting tested regularly for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
