Emtricitabine, Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, Efavirenz

Emtricitabine, Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, and Efavirenz are three medications commonly used in combination to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This combination, also known as Emtricitabine/Tenofovir/Efavirenz (ETV/FTC/EFV), is part of a class of drugs called antiretroviral therapy (ART).
Emtricitabine (FTC) and Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that work by preventing the HIV virus from replicating in the body. Efavirenz (EFV) is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that also inhibits the replication of the virus by blocking the action of the reverse transcriptase enzyme.
The ETV/FTC/EFV combination is typically used as a first-line treatment for HIV-1 infection in treatment-naive adults and adolescents with a CD4 cell count greater than or equal to 200 cells/mm3. This combination has been shown to be effective in suppressing the viral load and improving immune function in people living with HIV.
The use of ETV/FTC/EFV should be accompanied by regular monitoring of the patient’s response to treatment, including blood tests to check for potential side effects and drug interactions. Additionally, HIV-infected individuals should continue taking this medication as prescribed to maintain viral suppression and prevent the transmission of the virus to others.
