Maraviroc
Maraviroc is an antiretroviral medication used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. It is a CCR5 antagonist, which means it blocks the entry of the virus into human immune cells by binding to the CCR5 receptor on the cell surface. This prevents the virus from infecting the cells and helps to slow down the progression of the disease.
Maraviroc is typically used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs as part of a highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimen. This combination approach helps to maximize the effectiveness of the treatment and reduce the likelihood of the virus developing resistance to the medication.
The primary indication for maraviroc is for patients who have a CCR5-tropic HIV-1 strain and have experienced treatment failure with other antiretroviral medications. Maraviroc is not effective against HIV-2 or non-CCR5-tropic HIV-1 strains.
Maraviroc is available in tablet form and is typically taken once daily, with or without food. As with all antiretroviral medications, follow the prescribed dosage and treatment schedule to ensure the best possible outcomes.
