Stavudine
Stavudine, also known as d4T, is an antiretroviral medication used in the treatment of HIV infection. It belongs to a class of drugs called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), which work by inhibiting the replication of the HIV virus in the body.
Stavudine is often used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs to form a highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) regimen. This combination therapy helps to suppress the viral load in the blood and improve the immune system function in people living with HIV.
The medication is available in tablet form and is typically taken twice daily, as prescribed by a healthcare professional. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and schedule to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment and to minimize the risk of developing resistance to the drug.
Stavudine may cause side effects, such as anemia, lactic acidosis, and peripheral neuropathy. Patients should report any unusual symptoms to their healthcare provider immediately. Additionally, regular blood tests are necessary to monitor the levels of white blood cells and red blood cells, as well as to check for kidney and liver function.
