Loperamide
Loperamide is an over-the-counter medication that belongs to a class of drugs called antidiarrheals. It is primarily used for the treatment of acute diarrhea, particularly in cases where the underlying cause is not serious, such as gastroenteritis. Loperamide works by slowing down the movement of the gut, which helps to reduce the frequency and severity of diarrhea.
The active ingredient, loperamide, is a synthetic derivative of opium and acts on the opioid receptors in the gut. This action decreases the secretion of water and electrolytes into the bowel, reducing the motility of the intestinal muscles, and prolonging the time it takes for the bowel to contract. These combined effects help to alleviate diarrhea symptoms.
Loperamide is available in tablet and liquid forms and is typically taken in doses of 4 milligrams, four times a day. Follow the instructions provided by the pharmacist or healthcare professional, and not exceed the recommended dosage. In some cases, loperamide may be combined with other medications to treat specific types of diarrhea, such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea or traveler’s diarrhea.
Loperamide should not be used to treat diarrhea caused by infections, as it may mask the symptoms and allow the infection to progress. If the diarrhea is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms like fever, blood in the stool, or significant weight loss, consult a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation and diagnosis.
