Racecadotril
Racecadotril is a prescription medication used to treat diarrhea caused by certain conditions, such as gastroenteritis (stomach flu) and postoperative ileus (a condition where the intestines do not move food through the body as they should after surgery). It is not suitable for treating diarrhea caused by antibiotics or other medications.
Racecadotril works by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for the production of diarrhea-causing substances in the intestines, ultimately reducing the volume and frequency of watery stools. It does not, however, address the underlying cause of the diarrhea.
Racecadotril is typically administered orally as a tablet or liquid and is usually prescribed for short-term use, as prolonged use may lead to decreased effectiveness. Follow the doctor’s instructions carefully and complete the entire course of treatment to ensure the best possible outcome.
Patients should inform their healthcare provider of any pre-existing conditions, allergies, or medications they are currently taking, as Racecadotril may interact with certain drugs. Additionally, monitor for any side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, or skin rash, and report them to the doctor promptly.
