Capreomycin

Capreomycin is an antibiotic medication that belongs to the aminoglycoside class. It is primarily used to treat severe bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria responsible for tuberculosis (TB). Capreomycin works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and killing them by interfering with their protein synthesis.
Capreomycin is often used in combination with other antibiotics, such as rifampicin and isoniazid, to ensure the most effective treatment of tuberculosis. The medication is administered through intramuscular or intravenous injections, as it is not suitable for oral use.
Closely monitor patients receiving capreomycin, as it can cause kidney and hearing damage, particularly when used in high doses or for extended periods. Regular blood tests and audiological evaluations are necessary to ensure patient safety.
