Gamma Benzene Hexachloride, Cetrimide

Gamma Benzene Hexachloride, also known as GBH or gammasol, is an organochlorine compound used primarily as an antiseptic and disinfectant in healthcare settings. GBH has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, effective against a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Cetrimide is a quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) used in healthcare products as a surfactant, solubilizer, and disinfectant.
In combination, GBH and Cetrimide are used in antiseptic solutions, such as Gamclor or Gamsol, to prepare the skin for injections or to clean minor wounds. They can also be found in various formulations as a component in disinfectants, cleaners, and surface disinfectants for general cleaning and disinfection purposes in hospitals and other healthcare settings.
Both substances are effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi and yeasts, but they have limited efficacy against viruses and mycobacteria. They should be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and care should be taken to ensure proper contact time and dilution to prevent resistance and ensure effective disinfection.
